How to Scale with No-Code - Jonas Ley from FINN

No Code
August 6, 2024

In our recent nocodeklub event, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Jonas Ley, Business Automation Manager at FINN, a rapidly growing car subscription company.

In our engaging conversation, Jonas shared insights into how FINN leverages no-code tools to scale their operations efficiently.

We caught up with him again for a written interview.

Let's dive into it to uncover the practical applications and strategies they employ to stay ahead in the competitive car subscription market.

Hi Jonas, thanks for your time. To start, could you give us a brief introduction about yourself and your role at FINN?

Jonas: Thank you for having me. I'm Jonas Ley, and I work at FINN as a Business Automation Manager. Essentially, my job involves working with our product tech team to build and iterate on low-code and no-code solutions. We handle everything from quick prototyping to solving operational issues, enabling us to scale efficiently. We started with no-code tools early on, which has been crucial for our rapid growth.

That's great. Can you tell us more about FINN and the role no-code tools play in your operations?

Jonas: FINN offers a car subscription service where customers can select a car online, and we handle everything from maintenance to delivery.

No-code tools have been integral in managing our processes. For instance, they helped us grow to 20,000+ cars and subscriptions in just a couple of years. We automate numerous processes like data synchronization, car maintenance scheduling, and customer support workflows, significantly improving our operational efficiency.

It sounds like no-code tools have been a game-changer for you. How did you get started with no-code, and what were some of the early challenges?

Jonas: I have a mixed background in business and engineering, which naturally led me to explore no-code solutions.

Initially, one of the biggest challenges was ensuring that everyone on the team, regardless of their technical background, could use these tools effectively. We addressed this by creating a culture of experimentation and providing comprehensive training sessions. This approach allowed us to quickly prototype solutions and iterate based on feedback.

That's smart. Could you share a specific example of a process you've automated using no-code tools?

Jonas: Certainly. One notable example is our car subscription process.

We automated the entire workflow from when a customer selects a car to when it gets delivered. Using tools like Make, we connected various APIs and systems to ensure smooth data flow and process automation. This not only saved us time but also allowed us to handle a higher volume of subscriptions without increasing our team size significantly.

Impressive. How do you decide which processes to automate with no-code tools versus traditional coding?

Jonas: It largely depends on the complexity and volume of the process.

No-code tools are excellent for prototyping and handling low to moderate complexity tasks. For instance, initial integrations with new partners or small-scale automations are usually done with no-code tools. However, as the volume and complexity increase, we transition these processes to full code to ensure stability and scalability.

One topic we always see in our projects is data security. How do you handle data security and compliance, especially since you deal with sensitive customer information?

Jonas: Data security is a top priority for us.

We moved from using Airtable for data management to a more secure setup with Postgres databases and proper access controls. This transition was part of our "Green Dragon" project, which aimed at enhancing our data security protocols. We ensure that all our integrations and automations comply with industry standards, and we have strict access controls to protect sensitive information.

Given your experience, what advice would you give to companies looking to scale using no-code tools?

Jonas: My advice would be to start small and gradually scale up. Identify key processes that can benefit from automation and test them with no-code tools. It's crucial to foster a culture of learning and experimentation within your team.

Additionally, ensure that you have robust data security measures in place from the beginning. Involving stakeholders early and maintaining clear communication are also essential for successful implementation.

Jonas's insights provide a clear roadmap for leveraging no-code tools to scale operations effectively. By fostering a culture of experimentation and maintaining strong collaboration between business and tech teams, companies can harness the power of no-code solutions to drive growth and efficiency.
